How modern schools differ from Victorian ones

Our modern schools are seen to be, or should be, a bastion of good measured and unbiased teaching. The national curriculum that was created in 1988 was enshrined in law to create an environment that would primarily equip students with the knowledge to be able to apply for employment depending on their ability. It would also say that it was the goal of education to enrich them in the culture and history of Britain and expose and give them access to the works of the finest minds in the world in the present and in the past. Although it’s been changed and amended by Governments down through the decades since it has essentially the same aim that was first set out. With growing technologies like Websites for schools, such as those from fsedesign.co.uk/websites-for-schools/, the modern school is a lively and interactive place.

We also have a greater understanding of how pupils learn and react in schools. It allows teachers to be proactive to student needs. Most schools operate a co-ed process, although there are still some same sex schools if this is the prefered choice.

This differs greatly from the Victorian school. Whilst uniform remains a constant what is taught and how is very different. Physical punishments were certainly the norm back then for both sexes, who were kept segregated. Children were sitting in rows of desks or long benches. Work was recorded on slate. Teaching was by rote, getting the children to repeat times tables over and over again.
