Gardeners Jobs to Do This Autumn

For a gardener, autumn is one of the busiest months of the year. After the summer flowers have gone for another year, there are lots of jobs to get on with in the garden, to prepare for the oncoming winter, as well as for the spring and summer next year.

Lawns this year have taken a real battering – the hot weather in the summer that led to hosepipe bans has taken its toll on many lawns, which are the pride and joy of many a gardener! Before winter sets in, give your lawn one last mow, and then give your lawnmower some care and attention. If you need to make repairs, you can get parts online from places like this mountfield parts supplier www.diyspareparts.com/parts/mountfield  This is also a good time to give the mower a good clean out before putting it away. When it comes to the lawn, it is worth putting a treatment on the lawn itself, to give it some health through the winter.

If you have trees in your garden, this is the time to give them some love and attention. If they are dead or diseased, they are more likely to fall down in the winter, as we have strong winds and storms to contend with. You can cut back overgrown shrubs and bushes at this time of the year, but for trees it can be quite dangerous, so it is better to get a qualified tree surgeon to do it for you. If you have fruit trees, it is particularly important that you cut these back correctly, so that they can bear fruit next year.

For buildings and structures in your garden, check them for any damage, and also that they are watertight. Check underneath shed roofs for damage and damp, and clear dead leaves, moss and other debris from roofs which may be hiding damage underneath or contributing to it further. Fences are also a thing to focus on in the autumn, as they come under a lot of strain in the winter. Make repairs to your fence now to prevent it from getting blown over by strong winds. Check it for areas of weakness or damage.
