Things we can do to stay warm in winter

Keeping warm in winter is not simply about being comfortable but also a matter for our health. There are a number of things that we should all do to stay warm when the mercury plummets and these include:

  • Layer up – Dressing in multiple layers is more beneficial than one thick sweater, for example. Several thin layers of material work better so you could invest in some thermals if it gets really cold!
  • Keep warm in bed – Consider wearing bed socks or layering an extra blanket on top of the duvet. The coldest time of night is just before dawn so make sure all windows are closed before you go to sleep.
  • Hang thermal curtains – Help to keep draughts at bay by choosing thick thermal curtains for window dressings during the winter. For maximum benefit, close the curtains as the sun goes down to trap in the warmth.

  • Emergency numbers – Keep a list of emergency numbers close to hand, such as the power company and gas emergency line. You won’t want to hang around to sort out heating or plumbing issues when it’s freezing cold outside!
  • Weather Forecast – Keep an eye on the weather forecasts so you know in advance of any poor incoming weather. This helps to provide time to arrange medication, food deliveries and prepare the house, for example.
