What to know about drain lining

You may well already have heard of drain lining. But what exactly is it, how does it work, what are its benefits and is it expensive?

What is drain lining?

Drain lining is a fairly new, minimally invasive technique that can be used to repair and rectify defects in drains and pipes.

How does it work?

Drain lining involves inserting a lining sleeve into an existing pipe. This lining bonds to the inside, effectively creating a ‘pipe within a pipe’.

There are two widely used methods: ambient cured lining, and heat cured lining. Ambient cured lining uses a resin that self-cures and is better suited to smaller sites and partial repairs. Heat cured lining uses the inversion method to install the resin and is used more on industrial sites and for lining entire pipes.

What are the benefits?

Drain lining has a number of key advantages. Firstly, as a ‘no dig’ technology, excavation is not required. This means that it is far less disruptive, and less specialist equipment is needed. Drain lining can be carried out on pipes of pretty much any size and is considered a permanent and environmentally friendly technique. It is also able to increase water flow capacity.

Is it expensive?

Whilst the cost is always dependent on the exact nature of the issue, as a general rule, drain lining is a cheaper method than traditional excavation and repair. This is because it requires less equipment and fewer man-hours.

Is it always possible?

There are some instances where drain lining is just not possible. In these cases, there will still be a need to excavate. This is more likely if the drain is completely collapsed rather than just damaged.
