Should I buy a written off car?

If you are looking to purchase a used vehicle, you likely already know that it can be extremely difficult to purchase a high-quality used car for a good price.

As there is no single reliable process that can be used to ascertain the structural condition of a used vehicle or to understand the history of the vehicle in question, it is unfortunately all too easy to be sold a used car that has been overvalued or isn’t quite what it appears to be.
There is also always the possibility that you may be being offered a car that has been previously written off, which can have a huge impact on the quality and overall value of that vehicle.

What is a written-off car?

When a vehicle is written off, it essentially means that it has been declared a ‘total loss.’ However, there are two different write-off categories:

1. Actual loss

An actual loss is declared when a vehicle can’t and/or shouldn’t be repaired. The DVLA will not re-register vehicles that have been placed into this write-off category because they are unsafe.

2. Constructive loss

A constructive loss is declared when it is possible for a vehicle to be repaired, but those repair costs would exceed the sum of money required to replace the vehicle. Constructive loss vehicles are often taken on by vehicle salvage businesses or body shop owners who will conduct the required repairs and offer them for sale in a condition that means they are roadworthy.

Remember, if you are uncertain about the condition or history of a vehicle, don’t buy it. There are always other options to pursue, even if you need a vehicle at short notice. For example, car leasing in Bristol is an alternative to purchasing a vehicle and Autolyne is one example of a car leasing broker with the ability to help you to obtain the best deals.

It is important to thoroughly check the condition of the vehicle before you commit to purchase, and we recommend obtaining an evaluation from an independent expert or engineer.
