How Forklift Training Certificates Work

Forklift training certificates are more than just pieces of paper – understanding what each document looks like and what it says will help operators and employers alike to comply with legislation.

What You Receive After Training

Certificates from a forklift training course are usually issued by the training provider and include information on the type of truck that has been trained on, the category of the training and the date of completion of the course. Some training providers also issue an operator card, which is a credit card size document with the operator’s details on it. This can be a useful item for the operator to carry with them at all times as proof of their ability to operate a forklift truck.

Novice Versus Conversion Certificates

A Novice Certificate is issued to a completely new operator and a Conversion Certificate is issued to an already qualified operator on another truck type i.e. a Counterbalance License holder completing a Reach Truck Course would receive a Conversion Certificate. These certificates appear to be similar however contain important information that must be recorded correctly.

There is no fixed life to a for certificates, however in line with HSE guidance for lift truck operator training employers must ensure that operators are kept up to date and remain competent. Refresher training is generally recommended to be undertaken every 3-5 years however some employers choose to undertake annual training to check operators are still competent.

What Employers Are Expected to Keep

All operator certificates should be held by the employer and a record of any additional training, such as refresher or as a conversion, should be kept by the employer. It is easiest to keep a folder of all of the operators’ certificates and then production of evidence of their competence is easy should an inspector call.

Finding a Course Locally

Organising your certificates will take a couple of minutes to do and will then be there to protect you and your employer in the future.
